The Site
Located on the coast, and enjoying a pleasant Mediterranean climate with many public beaches, Barcelona is a dynamic and progressive city. In sophistication and cultural diversity, Barcelona ranks with the major cities of Europe, which can be seen in its rich traditions in the fields of painting, music, and architecture. With a population of over 2 million, Barcelona is a charming city. Spanish and Catalan theater, concerts, and opera abound. It has a vibrant nightlife and café scene. Because it is the capital city of Catalunya, students on this program will experience distinctive Catalan culture, while improving their ability to read, write, and speak Spanish. The University of Barcelona (UB) was founded in 1450. Today, the university has four campuses in different parts of the city. Participants on this program will take all of their course work at the main campus, which is situated in the heart of Barcelona's famous city center, near Las Ramblas, the Gaudi houses, and the Picasso museum.

The Program
This four-week intensive program is held at the Estudios Hispánicos Center of the University of Barcelona. Students will enroll for six credits during the Summer program, following the curriculum of the Center of Estudios Hispánicos. Students will take three credits of Spanish language and three credits of Spanish culture. A placement test is given prior to arrival in Barcelona to determine students' language level, beginning to advanced. Language courses meet from 9:15am to 2:15pm, Monday through Thursdays. Culture courses meet from 4pm to 7:15pm, Tuesdays through Thursdays. The first week of the program will be focused on the Director's Course and visits to local sites around Barcelona. The following three weeks will include the language and culture courses at Estudios Hispánicos, in addition to the Director's Course. Please note that the culture course is taught in Spanish, adapting to the students' level.
